Manchester al Mondo: Contemplatio Mortis, et ImmortalitatisSir Henry Montagu, …1st Earl of Manchester (1563-1642), was at various times MP for Northhamptonshire and for the City of London, Recorder of London, Lord Chief Justice, Lord High Treasurer, Lord President of the Council, Speaker of the House of Lords, and Guardian of the Realm; at the time of his death he had been a Privy Counsellor since 1620, Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire since 1624, Lord Privy Seal since 1628, and High Steward of the University of Cambridgesince 1634.He wrote, and had published by the King’s Printer, “Manchester al Mondo: Contemplatio Mortis, et Immortalitatis” (Manchester to the World: A Contemplation of Death and Immortality) in 1631, and it has remained in print ever since. The illustration above is of the frontispiece and title page of the third edition, in which various contributors expanded his ideas from examples taken from events of the traumatic Great Fire of London in 1666.The “true depiction” of the Earl on the frontispiece is surmounted on the left by his Arms (Montagu quartering Monthermer) impaled with those of his wife Catherine, daughter of Sir William Spencer and ancestress of all subsequent Earls and Dukes of Manchester; on the right is a shield bearing his Crest of a griffin’s head and wings. The title page depicts the various stages of the soul’s journey from the dead body to the New Jerusalem and to ultimate merger with the Godhead. Manchester’s eschatology has some interesting parallels to ideas and images found in the Tibetan Book of the Dead — but it will be difficult to judge its accuracy until one has actually died oneself. Many different editions can be found in most large libraries, and it was reprinted again as a paperback this year:

The library of the dukes of Montagu and of ManchesterSir John Montagu, KG, KB…, PC, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690 – 1749), had his books bound in diced calf; on the cover of each volume, stamped in gilt, is the Garter enclosing the crest of Montagu (a griffin’s head couped between two wings expanded Or) and surmounted by a ducal coronet.Below is one of the library’s labels, which were pasted on the verso of each book’s flyleaf, and which repeat the armorial design of the binding; this particular volume was housed in “Case H, Shelf 1”. The library was inherited by the heirs of Duke John’s son-in-law and cousin, Sir William Montagu, KB, 2nd Duke of Manchester.See MoreLikeUnlike · · Share · 30 minutes ago
